Greetings fellow publicans and citizens! Finally, summer has caught up to us, in time for July 4th and our barbecue/camping plans. The grasses have pretty much finished their orgy, much to the relief of those with allergic reactions to their proclivities. It’s time for swimming, grilling, boating and vitamin D-gorging. Here’s what fun and interesting stuff we got for ya at the Calapooia this week!

The second Wednesday of the month is when we host SCIENCE PUB at the Calapooia. There are many organized science pub affairs around, but our SCIENCE PUB is a unique collaboration between The Calapooia Brewing Company and the University of Oregon’s Center for Materials Research, led by Education and Outreach facilitator, Andy Bedingfield. SCIENCE PUB starts at 6:30 with about a 45 minute presentation by a guest scientist, engineer, researcher or naturalist on the topic of their particular field or specialization, followed by another 45 minutes of questions and audience participation. This Wednesday, July 11th’s SCIENCE PUB is especially exciting for us because our guest speaker is Albany’s own, Dr. Tom Rafalski. Dr. Rafalski has been a specialist in the research and treatment of HIV/AIDS for the past 20+ years. He will discuss what we’ve learned and how the treatment of, and attitude toward, this rapacious disease has changed over time. This is a free event.

The OLCC allows us to have minors in the pub until 8pm, as long as they are with a responsible adult and are there for the purpose of consuming food.

On Thursday we welcome back Johnny Now and Le Marquis in their new name and style, THE NOW BROTHERS. This dynamic duo (sometimes joined by the mad engineering genius who plays a stand up bass made from a suitcase) are adept at taking the most familiar classic-rock songs and putting a novel spin on them. Show time is 8pm. No cover.

Saturday brings us alternative acoustic rock phenoms, ENGRAVED ACOUSTIC. What used to be an all electric hard-rock band, went acoustic with unique female vocals (shades of the Cranberries or Evanescence) eliciting haunting sound textures and imagery. They’ve been playing together for 9 years and have a wide repertoire of original songs. Show time is 8pm. No cover.

Join us for our spectacular Sunday Blues Jam, every Sunday at 4pm!

Cheers, and enjoy the sunshine!
