Hi Everyone,

The CSMC and Calapooia Brewery would like to invite you all to Not a Drop to Drink: Water Filtration Issues in the 21st Century, a presentation by Darren Johnson.

In the US we are fortunate to know that, with very few exceptions, when we turn on the tap we are drinking clean water. However, two-thirds of the world’s population lack access to clean water and one-third lack access to a reliable source of water, making clean drinking water one of the world’s most precious resources. This Science Pub will discuss water purification challenges, some current hot topics in water treatment, and emerging approaches to water purification—one of the grand challenges of the twenty-first century.

Darren Johnson, PhD , received his BS in chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin in 1996, earned his PhD in chemistry in 2000 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent two years at the Scripps Research Institute as a National Institutes of Health post-doctoral fellow. He is an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Oregon, associate director of UO’s Materials Science Institute.  His research group uses tools in nanoscience and coordination chemistry to explore a variety of problems in materials science and toxic ion remediation and sensing, much of which is investigated within the National Science Foundation Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (http://sustainablematerialschemistry.org/).
