Hi Everyone,

The Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC) and Calapooia Brewery would like to invite you all to Piezoelectrics: Putting the “Squeeze” on New Materials a presentation by OSU Assistant Professor of Chemistry Michelle Dolgos.

Description:  Piezoelectric materials produce an electric field when a strain is induced and vice versa.   These types of materials are not as well known to the general public when compared to things like batteries, fuel cells, and magnets, but they have more applications than you might think.  This talk will describe what a piezoelectric is and the requirements for making a piezoelectric material, common as well as surprising (and wacky!) applications, and problems with the materials that scientists are working on today.

Bio:  Michelle Dolgos is an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at OSU.  She got her B.S. in Chemistry from Hillsdale College in Michigan and her Ph.D. in chemistry from the other OSU (Ohio State University).  After she finished her Ph.D. she moved abroad for three years and worked as a postdoc at the University of Liverpool before moving to Oregon.  In her spare time she enjoys trail running, reading, hiking, and cooking when she can, and her newest hobby is watching Dr. Who.
