The Last August 2011 Ever!

Hello and Welcome to The New and Improved Calapooia Website! Pretty huh? Thanks Dan.

So it’s the last bit of August comin’ atcha. We finally got us some summer up here in the Valley. Let’s hope it’s of the “Indian” variety. To celebrate the end of this most full, and fun, month of the summer, Calapooia Brewing Company brings you some great music.

This Thursday, the 25th, special guests Jaw Knee Now and Le Marquis bring you their novel and clever interpretations of classic music both well known and obscure. If you like classic rock with a twist, you will enjoy this duo. The fun starts at 8pm and it’s free.

Friday the 26th brings us the return of The Vicki Stevens Band! If you need to shake off some excess booty, or just need a mood lifter, this is the show for you. Vicki and the boys have got the medicine for whatever ails ya. Showtime is 9pm and there is no cover!

And on Saturday, the 27th, it’s Vicki Stevens’ Eugene counterpart, The Broh-Taylor Band for more of that rockin’ blues action. If you didn’t get enough on Friday, or you just can’t get enough, come back on Saturday when The Broh-Taylor Band will give it to you starting at 9pm. And again, no cover. So come and enjoy some great music with great beer and food at The Calapooia Brewpub!

Still want more hot, sweaty blues action? Come down on Sunday at 4pm for our regular Calapooia Blues Jam run by the core members of The Vicki Stevens Band. It’s a better way to worship than the way some folks do it.

One final note while I’m talking about the last of August. Those of us that make the Calapooia breathe, her vital organs, her brains, heart, spleen, her staff, are throwing ourselves a party. We will be closed on Monday, August 29th, all day, so that we may get together and pat ourselves on the back for another successful year of good food, suds and service. We’ll reopen Tuesday at our usual time, 11:30.

Cheers, and Thank You for your time and patronage!

The Pooia Crew

Calapooia Brewing Company’s 5th Anniversary Party featuring The Vicki Stevens Band and Xenat-Ra is this Friday! For $10 at the door, you’ll see two ‘Pooia fan favorites perform on the same night, enjoy a smoked pig dinner, and a pint of beer. The fun starts at 6PM.

Come down and celebrate 5 great years of beer, music, food, and the best customers anywhere. Thank you all and see you Friday,

From the Mid-Willamette Valley comes a young bard with an old soul. Based in Eugene, with roots deep throughout the valley, including Albany, Tyler Fortier is a fine example of the artistic wealth of the region. Barely a quarter of a century old, Tyler exhibits a wisdom beyond his years. Lifetimes of pain, loss, renewal and hope can be heard in the voice of this old soul wearing the guise of a young man. Usually, such depth comes from much suffering and family strife, yet when Tyler plays the Calapooia, the place is filled with family and friends of at least 3, perhaps 4 generations, all delighting in him and one another. It’s as if he is able to speak for the newly born as well as the well worn with their full complicity. When you come to see and hear Tyler Fortier, alone or with a band, you’ll know you’re experiencing something very special.

Showtime is 8pm, Friday the 29th at The Calapooia Brewpub. Free.

From the depths of Los Angeles they come, with a trunk full of pathos and a steam-punk sensibility. Storyteller Mssr. Incroyable spins tales of whoa and wonder, banjo or guitar in hand as percussionist Deacon pounds out every beat of your wounded heart on a drum kit fashioned from common household hardware. Chains rattle across a washboard as tortured words are whispered through a megaphone and a broiler pan is beaten to the rhythm of a young man’s optimistic rush through life. Pleasure and pain, the joys and vicissitudes of life are celebrated by this two man, sometimes more men, show. This will be the 5th trip to The ‘Pooia by The Peculiar Pretzelmen and we can hardly wait! Any of you who have seen them before know what a treat is in store. If you haven’t, this Saturday, April 16th is your chance! A mere $3 is your ticket to an evening of smiles and an unforgettable show. Showtime is 9pm. Don’t miss it! In the meantime, check out this video…

It was a few Sundays ago that I was privileged to spend an afternoon at a storage facility turned rehearsal space with the newest thing in the Willamette music scene. It is a band called Why Why Zed, and they play the music of Rush. As anyone born before 1980 can tell you, that is no mean feat. The Canadian super-group born in 1968 (the trio unchanged since before their 1974 American debut tour) is third in the world for album sales behind only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It’s members, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neal Peart, are considered gods of their particular instruments and were just recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Who’s got the kind of balls to tackle such a monolith of musical mastery? We got yer balls right here, in the sleepy little college town of Corvallis, Oregon. There is one other Rush tribute band currently active in the state of Oregon, Moving Pictures, based in Portland. But our own group of local performers are veterans and virtuosos in their own right.

Paul Kincaid, a luthier and self-professed “math rock” geek, found himself challenged by the “strange Canadian math code” for which Rush is well known. He first contacted J.D. Monroe, also known as The Turntable Enabler, who’s prodigious prowess on the drum kit is undisputed. J.D. was a natural, being that he learned how to play drums listening to Neal Peart’s work on the Rush albums. Keyboardist, Dave Trenkel, another local music legend, who’s credits are too long for discussion here, remembers being over Rush after high school as he continued in his personal discovery of progressive rock. Today, however, he enjoys the sense of nostalgia coupled with the chance to further stretch himself musically. Tyler Nitske, guitarist, joins the ensemble in the Alex Lifeson role and takes to it naturally, himself an aficionado of progressive rock, as evidenced by the inspirations of his Portland band Keel Over.

The name Why Why Zed is a play on the Rush song YYZ which relates to the fact that those letters in Morse Code are the designation for the Toronto international airport. Toronto being Rush’s home city. They will be performing the entire live album, Exit Stage Left. This Friday, April 1st, will be their debut performance, and they will be accompanied by another unsung Corvallis sensation, The Fake Police, who have played the Calapooia before and were outstanding. Don’t miss this phenomenal double-header. Showtime is 8pm, cover is $5 and you must be 21 or over. This show will be in our spacious warehouse, so there’s plenty of room.

We’ll see you there!

Cheers!

They’re back! It’s Vicki Stevens in all her glory with her gang of Calapooia All-Stars coming to the ‘Pooia to shake you out of your winter blues. It is spring, after all. Since The Vicki Stevens Band’s foray to Memphis for an international blues competition, they’ve all jammed together a Sunday here and there, but this is the first official return of The Vicki Stevens Band since 2010! Be here and hopefully you’ll get a little on ya!

This Friday, March 25th at 9pm. $3 cover.

Come get some a this!

St. Pat’s Day @ The Pooia!

Top o’ whatever-part-o’-the-day-you’re-lookin’-at-this to ye! It’s that green time of year, orange for some, for honoring the fair folk of the misty, emerald realm across the world. To many, Oregon is analogous of Ireland, with it’s verdant valleys, rugged coastline and let’s not forget the rain. And our fair pub, tucked away in a strange part of Albany, is as close to an old-world pub as you’re going to find in this part of the Willamette Valley. So, come by and join us in celebration of all things Irish.

Beginning at 5pm we are offering a trio of Irish food specialties:

Lamb Stew, Corned Beef and Cabbage with Mash and Cider-marinated Pork Chops with Cabbage and Mash. All served with house-made Soda Bread!

At 6pm we will be joined by special guests Aaron and Lee of 2Towns Cider House in Corvallis as they share a special tasting of their wonderful hard apple ciders with our patrons. They’ve only been in business since December of 2010 and are already struggling to keep up with demand! Come see why!

At 7:30 we will enjoy the music of guitar and fiddle duo, The McGs! www.myspace.com/themcgsmusic

And, if you insist, we do have green food coloring for your beer, but it won’t improve the taste of our outstanding brews. It’ll just look like something someone on Star Trek would be drinking. But, have it your way, don’t ye know.

We’ll see ya then, if not before!

Cheers!

Valentine’s Day at The Calapooia!

Forgot to make reservations? Don’t have a date? Don’t want a date? Disgusted by the idea of V-Day as a couples only holiday? Forget all that. Whether your inclination is to be romantic or not this Monday the 14th of February, the Calapooia is the place for you. No reservations will be taken. You will be seated where there is space, likely next to someone you are, or will become, acquainted with and we will treat you like the treasure that you are. We will have a full staff waiting on you at your table and bringing your drinks and food to you without your having to even get up to ask for a taste of the chili beer.  Beginning at 6pm you will be able to order your choice of Oregon Natural Meats prime rib with a root vegetable au-gratin or poached, wild Coho salmon served on a bed of whole romaine leaves in a house-made caesar dressing festooned with shaved Romano cheese and garlic-buttery croutons. The dinner begins with a cup of crab bisque, followed by a salad of roasted golden beets with gorgonzola and candied pecans drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette. After that you’re onto the entree. Then, for dessert, Laura “The Prez” Bryngelson is making flourless chocolate torte drizzled with a reduction of our Undertow Imperial Stout. We will suggest some beer and wine pairings for each course, or choose your own.

The prices are $20 for the Brew Beef Prime Rib and $17 for the Coho Salmon.

The regular menu will be offered throughout the evening as well, complete with the same full service.

At 7pm, we welcome for the first time, musical duo HYMN FOR HER, all the way from Pennsylvania. The essence of American romance, two people a baby and a dog, on the road, pulling an Airstream trailer. Check this out and then go to their website for more music, www.hymnforher.com

Here Comes The Shinkle Band!
