It’s true that we in the Willamette Valley are truly blessed with a wide range of musical talent, perhaps due to the relatively close proximity of the University of Oregon to the south, the currently “in” and “hip” city of Portland to the north and right smack-dab in the middle, our beloved Oregon State University and it’s container, the town of Corvallis. This provides a fecund pool of creativity and philomathic tendencies…ah what the hell, we love music and culcha.

That said, we certainly don’t have the market cornered by any stretch of the imagination. Seattle is one of the most influential and (dare I use the word?… I dare) progressive cities in the U.S. today and has been, musically, for a good three decades at least. Well, it still is and The Hoot Hoots are a good example of that. The following is an excerpt from The Hoot Hoots‘ website…www.thehoothoots.com

“Bunny suits and super heroes. Rainbow cloaks and Vader onesies. Fuzz, synths, sing-a-longs, and yes more fuzz! Seattle power pop quartet The Hoot Hoots bring all that and more as they pledge allegiance to the United States of Have-A-Good-Time, and its obvious in both their live shows and in their two 2011 full length releases, Silly Lecture Series and Appetite for Distraction.

In reviews of their live shows and albums, the Seattle Weekly has compared them favorably to the Shins, the Deli Seattle Magazine has praised them for their “flashy, out-of-control pop sensibilities,” and countless audiences from venues across Seattle can bear witness to their dedication to creating a fun, energetic performance. Think vintage Flaming Lips with a splash of NES and a dash of the Unicorns.”

This Friday will be their first foray into the Calapooia Brewing Company, and as far as I know, into this portion of the Willamette Valley. Their presentation and energy is infectious and I challenge anyone in the room to remain still. Best of all, you get to see them for free! It will cost you nothing but for the excellent beer you drink and the delicious food you eat. Showtime is 9 o’clock. Don’t miss this unique musical event, right here at Calapooia Brewing Company! Here’s a little taste of The Hoot Hoots…

Hi Everyone,

The Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC) and Calapooia Brewery would like to invite you all to How will climate change impact you as an Oregonian? A Science Pub presentation by Kathie Dello, the Associate Director of theOregon Science Change Research Institute.

Oregonians enjoy a quality of life that is unrivaled by most places in the US. The very things that contribute to our vitality are vulnerable in a changing climate. While the changes to our earth’s temperature are global, the impacts will be felt locally. What impacts are scientists expecting in a changing climate, and most importantly – how are we going to prepare?

Kathie Dello is the associate director of the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute, and Deputy Director of the Oregon Climate Service at Oregon State University. She managed Oregon’s first climate assessment report required by legislation, and specifically researches Oregon weather and climate. She has a Bachelors in Atmospheric Science and a Master’s in Physical Geography from The State University of New York at Albany. Though she comes to Oregon from New York, last summer a local newspaper decided that she could consider herself Oregonian because of the multiplying fleece jackets in her closet.

Where: Calapooia Brewery, 140 Hill St NE, Albany OR

When: May 8th, Trivia starts at 6:30 PM

Win a Prize!!! The CSMC will have prizes for the top five trivia competitors.

Words fail me as I try to come up with something insightful to say about my favorite Oregon band. I suppose what’s difficult about describing Xenat-Ra in any way resembling concise is why I like them so much. They are all over the freakin’ place! The components that comprise Xenat-Ra, have an appreciation of music so wide and diverse as to boggle the imagination of the typical Clear Channel consumer. It is a multifaceted nerd brain. A Frankensteinian combination of musical knowledge and style. A mad child suckled on the teats of John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, King Crimson, Black Sabbath, and Del the Funky Homosapien, to name just a few. Xenat-Ra is a true citizen of the world of music and it understands no borders. It is the Doctor, traversing time and space with style and humor in a TARDIS woven of a deep, abiding love of music in all it’s forms. Oh yeah, and they play pretty good too!

If you want to take a trip to places you’ve never dreamed could exist, this is your chance. Saturday, April 20th at 9pm at Calapooia Brewing Company.

Cheers!

This week we’ve got a triple header of good music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week!

Rusty Hinges are an old-timey folk duo that play the first Thursday of every month.

On Friday the 5th, a longtime friend of Calapooia Brewing and singer/songwriter extraordinaire, John Shipe transmutes suffering into art.

Saturday the 6th, enjoy the virtuosity of blues guitarist Robert Richter.

And don’t forget the blues jam on Sunday!

In this talk, Dr. Matthew Carnes will discuss recent scientific advancements leading to plastics made from renewable resources, things we can grow like corn and mushrooms. He will present an overview of the history of how synthetic plastics were developed starting in the early 1900′s and leading to modern plastics we see and use every day. In addition, he will discuss how new technology is enabling scientists to replace the building blocks of today’s plastics with greener, renewable, and biodegradable alternatives.

Dr Carnes was born in Sacramento, CA. He received his undergrad form UC San Diego in Chemical Engineering. He received his PhD from Columbia University in NYC in Organic Materials and Polymers. After grad school, he served as a postdoc for 2 years in Eindhoven the Netherlands. He is currently a researcher at the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry and is based at UO in Eugene. In his free time he likes cooking, hiking, mushroom hunting and baseball.
