Greetings and joyful quaffings, oh faithful pubsters! Spring is upon us and so the circle continues…

Here at The Calapooia Brewing Company, we are working to bring you the best beer, burgers, hospitality and music Albany, yay, the Valley has to offer. Take this week’s music line-up. On Friday we welcome returning regulars, JAKE PAYNE AND DIXIE CREEK. Mr. Payne and his wife Kalyn are the owners of The Dixie Creek Saloon in Tangent, Oregon. He named his band after the establishment where he started playing music for the public and now he owns the place. Talk about bringing it all back home. Thankfully, Jake is able to take time out of his busy schedule to play his bands’ original tunes here at the Calapooia and elsewhere throughout the Willamette Valley. Some time ago, Jake and the boys took it to the road and scored a television spot with a local station in Austin, Texas, where Jake developed his chops. Check it out…

JAKE PAYNE -Lead Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica, Bass. SCOTT EASTBURN-Mandolin, Fiddle, Banjo, Harmonica, Vocal. NICK CLARK- Bass. XION ZOA-Lead Guitar. KALYN RICH-Drums, vocals (also Jake’s spouse and co-owner of Dixie Creek Saloon.)

Then, on Saturday, April 3d, we’re cleaning up the warehouse for BREAK AS WE FALL. Break As We Fall is a Rock/Funk/Pop group formed in Corvallis, OR and currently based out of Portland, OR. Originally the solo project of founder Evan Churchill while a member of Corvallis local favorite Sweater Club, the lineup has settled on the core of Evan Churchill, Dan Grossen, Alex Moffat, Steve Hammond and Alia Beyer.

In the past year and a half Break As We Fall has opened for SoCal rockers Eve 6, been selected out 80 Portland bands for a spot in the KNRK Streets of Tanasbourne summer concert series and toured 4 states.

On May 7th, 2009, the band released their second record “If You’re Lonely”, 11 new songs mixed and mastered by Co-Op Studios in Nashville, TN. The album has been well-received by fans and critics alike, and is now available on iTunes.

PRESS

“If You’re Lonely” is a very good independent release from a young band that shows promise. – Register Guard

“Break As We Fall is deftly able to defy being stuffed into a dance/funk mold, even as their songs beg for funky dancing. It’s a style that’s deeply rooted but also totally their own.” – Eugene Weekly

“The international sensibility of Sting. A young Stevie Wonder’s soul. A tremulous David Cassidy vibrato. The energy of Jay Kay. The elemental sickness of Break As We Fall vocalist Evan Churchill is an arresting concoction. The Portland groovetet play confident blue-eyed, DIY rock’n’soul, and make you dance while they do it.” – Reno Tahoe Tonight

It promises to be a fun show so put on your shoes and do the funky Alphonzo down to the ‘Pooia for some fun with Break As We Fall.

Peace!

When the weather changes, the clocks get manipulated and we live with less sunshine overall, it’s easy for the spirit to darken. There are many things that can help mitigate that seasonal depression; basking in the light of full-spectrum bulbs, St. Johns Wort, comfort food (say a Class V Burger w/tater tots for instance), BEER (duh), or some good ol’ “tear the roof off the motha-sucka” funk! Over the past two weeks we have had the funk thanks to Willamette Valley bands, Volifonix and Break As We Fall.

Volifonix started with two brothers, Trevor and Blake Forbess from Oakland, Oregon. They’ve teamed up with guitarist Joe McClain, bassist Elijah Medina and Saxy Samurai, Tomo Tsurumi to form an “experimental, funk flavored milk-shake.” Based in Eugene, Volifonix just finished a West Coast tour promoting their recent album, Oregonisms, which won them Best Of Eugene status.

Boxzilla Tsurumi takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride.

Two weeks later, November 13th we had a visit from Corvallis born, Portland based Funk/Soul/Pop band Break As We Fall. They had just finished a West Coast tour as well, having just left California. They echoed sentiments we had heard from Volifonix, California sucks. Oregon audiences are so much more appreciative, especially at the ‘Pooia (I’m paraphrasing). Of course they would say that, but hey, they just happen to be right. We are very appreciative of such good music and good times.

As always, this little HP digi-cam doesn’t create the best cinematic experience, but it gives an idea. For a better representation of their sound, check out their album entitled, If You’re Lonely.

Thank you all, patrons and performers, for making the Calapooia Brewpub a special place. May the good times roll on…
