The Big 2010 ‘Pooia Update!

I was just talking to Paul the other day when I recalled it had been some time since I had caught up the website. At last check, we were still hoping the Beavs were Rose Bowl bound… Sadly they were not, but we congratulate them on another great season and look forward to 2010!

Here’s a quick picture from the live radio broadcast of the Joe Beavers Show at our brewpub:

Brewpub News

Since then there have been a couple changes around the pub.

First we’re changing our hours: We are now open every day of the week at 11:30!

And we’ve changed our keg sales hours as follows:

  • Tuesday 4:30-5:30pm
  • Thursday 4:30-5:30pm
  • Friday 4:30-5:30pm

In beer news, Mark has just finished a brand new amber rye recipe that Matt has named Rock Hard Rye. It features a hop that is new to us, the Zeus Bittering hops. It’s an American aromatic high-alpha hop — 15%, aka powerful! Mark reports this will only be available at the pub and should be pouring in about 3 weeks. He also noted that Simco Springs is now available again, and they have enough for some limited distribution as well.

A quick reminder that we have lots of great live music every week at our Downtown Albany brewpub. Become a fan of our Facebook group and get all the updates every week from Paul!

Upcoming Events

This weekend is a BMX expo that will be held in our atrium. The classic BMX Museum members are coming strong with some 50 members and their bikes. They’ll have them all lined up along with parts for sale and trade. And that’s not all. Check out the details from their website:

Our plans are for 70’s,80’s,90’s,freestyle, cruiser and survivor…Trophy’s for all categories!!! The owner of the bar is going to set up a hamburger bar with chicken, burgers, vegetarian if we need? We will have a bike there for raffle and we will be giving 5 or 6 kids bikes who cant afford them…swap meet too…There will be a live Jazz band that nite also…

Very cool guys!

Albany, Oregon Crab Fest Dinner at Calapooia BrewingWe also wanted to pass on a quick reminder that Crab Feed is just around the corner on February 6th, 3-8pm. $30 per ticket buys crab and chicken, plus all the sides, and 3 live bands will perform as well. We had a blast last year and can’t wait to host again!

We also wanted to let everyone know we’re heading to not only the KLCC Brewfest on February 12th and 13th, but also the Nano Beer Fest in Tigard. KLCC has details on their page and as soon as I get more details on the Nano Beer Fest, I will pass them along.

What’s Cooking

And don’t forget our great food in the new year! Try the Ruben:

We’re joining 20 other local breweries this Saturday for the Inaugural Mid Valley Brewfest at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center. Hang out and enjoy tunes from one our favorite bands, the Bush Pilots, and don’t miss a second of the OSU vs. USC game, which will be broadcast live!

Only $5 for the entry fee and $1 per taste. We’ll be pouring our Pacific Pilsner and rIPArian IPA.

Should be a fantastic time, see you there!

By the way, we’re in coming to Suds and Suds tonight in Corvallis for Small Batch Beer Night. Come on by from 6-9pm!

Well with the weather officially going all rain on us for the foreseeable future, I figured getting these pictures of Septembeerfest might add a little sunshine for us. What a fantastic late summer day that was with temps in the low 90’s and catching up with all our friends at one of the last brewfests of the season. We had a great time again this year and look forward to next summer already!

Enjoy the pictures, and if you have any to add, join our Flickr group on the right side of the website.

This Saturday is the 12th Annual Septembeerfest, which is a benefit for the Linn Benton Food Share. The event is held at the Benton County Fairgrounds and admission is only $10.

Calapooia Brewing is the premier sponsor for the event and I asked Laura to tell me more about why this event is so special to us:

This is one of our biggest events for the year… these are our peeps… people who can actually come see us at the brewery! Plus, we are going to join our Corvallis counterparts under one tent this year so attendees can immediately find all their local breweries in one spot. And, for the price of entry, the attendees will receive a pint glass with the Septembeerfest logo on one side and our logo on the other… a great reminder to always “Drink Good Beer!”

The weather looks absolutely perfect for a late summer brewfest and it will be a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. See you there!

I confess: I’ve taken more shots this month than I’ve had time to update the site! But before much more time passes I wanted to share pictures I’ve taken for Calapooia Brewing in the past couple of weeks.

Mark took me on a tour of the brewery highlighting the newly installed brew equipment. As you can tell, he’s passionate about his craft!

First picture is of Mark, Paul, and I. Next picture is a friend of ours, Alicia, who wanted to be pouring for us but pulled the Roots assignment instead. And finally that wonderful sausage!

Hope you enjoyed the pictures and hope to see you at our brewery and pub in Albany soon!

Oregon Garden Brewfest logoJoin us this weekend for the 5th annual Oregon Garden Brewfest in Silverton, Oregon. We had a great time last year and we’re eagerly looking ahead to this Friday to repeat. I can already smell those delicious sausages just thinking about this event!

Here are the details from the Oregon Garden Brewfest website:

April 24th& 25th, 2009
Friday: 4 pm – 11 pm
Saturday: Noon – 11 pm

This Oregon craft brewfest will feature many local beer brewers and will offer the chance to sample or enjoy a full glass of a wide variety of specialty beers. There will be live music to dance to and great food. The home brew competition is back this year.

This event is always standout to me because it usually marks the first weekend of good weather in the valley. We’ve had some outstanding weather already this week, let’s hope it continues through Saturday!

Update 4.24.09

This really is one of our favorite events. Check out this quote from yesterday’s Statesman Journal:

It’s the setting that makes the festival one of Laura Bryngelson’s preferred beer festivals.

“It’s actually one of our favorite ones, maybe only a little bit because last year, we won the People’s Choice award,” said the owner and president of Calapooia Brewing Company, which is based in Albany. “My husband and I are both very into gardening — at least before we bought the brewery — so we love to go there. It’s like all of the best things in Oregon, combined into one place. You can sample all the best Oregon beers, then take a walk around.”

And as a brewer, she said, she loves interacting with the festival-goers, getting feedback on her beer and maybe a little taste of the friendly competition.

“You’ll hear someone talk about, ‘Oh, did you go over to this booth? They have this weird chili beer,’ and we’ll turn around and say, ‘Oh, you like our chili beer?'” she said.

And, she said, the festival is family-friendly; those younger than 21 can enjoy the sights and sounds, if not the beer, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Last year, she said, “my son was 4 months old, and we were able to take him and my daughter … you’d never think you could get so many people getting together and drinking beer, but it’s so relaxed. It’s a very chill environment.”

Come join us this Friday and Saturday at Portland’s Spring Beer & Wine Fest, celebrating it’s 15th year! We’ll be pouring our Chili Beer and rIPArian IPA.

Here are some details from the event website:

April 10 & 11, 2009
Friday & Saturday from 12:00 noon till 11:00pm
Oregon Convention Center

While you’re sipping on fine craft beer, wine, spirits and cocktails, do a little shopping! Our arts and craft vendors and exhibitors offer unique treasures and interesting items. Or chill out in the attached heated outdoor smoker’s tent, a comfortable lounge area offering additional beer selections and a cigar vendor purveying fine tobacco items. And don’t forget: Admission is free the first two hours each day.

If you’re a fan of our brews and have been waiting to get Calapooia Brewing beers in Portland, we have some good news on the way. We are currently expanding out brewery and will have a wider reach soon! Look for an upcoming blog post with details of the expansion and early photos of the new equipment.
