What’s up at The ‘Pooia!

We’ve been having a great time with special events this month at The Calapooia Brewing Company! February 4th was the 13th Annual Greater Albany Rotary Club Crab Feed, which, if you’ve done the math, has been occurring in our space since before Mark and Laura took it over. Over 800 people came through our doors that day, doing their part to put a dent in the local Dungeness population. Then there was Valentine’s Day and we put on a 4 course meal including Prime Rib and Steelhead and John Shipe played romantic songs. So what’s next? Well there is Fat Tuesday and it’s a leap year, so February is an extra day long. I’d say that’s cause for celebration.

In the mean time, there’s music. Lots and lots of good music. Thursday’s are a rotation of local bands that play the same numbered Thursday of every month, Rusty Hinges, Wild Hog in The Woods and Rough Jazz. Every once in a while we have a guest appearance by another local favorite for a little variety. Every Saturday is our music showcase where we are entertained by singer/songwriters, folk groups, rock bands, jazz ensembles and just about every other kind of musical entertainment you’ve heard of. Every other Friday, or so, is a special musical highlight night where I’ve booked someone very special, or else I’d already filled all my Saturdays and I just had to get this band in before next winter!

On Sundays, something very unique occurs at the ‘Pooia. Lots of places have a blues jam at their establishment, most often occurring on an off business day where local musicians can come jam together and the house doesn’t usually pay them. But what has been happening every Sunday at the ‘Pooia for the last 3 or 4 years is something notable indeed. The brains of the outfit is a fellow named Froggy, who’s been heading up this shindig since it’s inception not long after the opening of Calapooia Brewing. Joined in late 2007 by Dennis Monroe, the heart of the blues jam, a sort of alchemy began. With shredding guitarists, Derek Zane and Steven (who’s last name escapes me) as the core of the jam, a who’s who of Oregon (and now they’re coming from other states!) blues players make cameo appearances and bring fresh juice to an already dynamic compilation. This last Sunday, we enj0yed a phenomenon known as Diva Day, wherein spectacular female vocalists came and dazzled a packed pub. So if you’ve never been to a blues jam, you should come check it out. It never disappoints. They only occasionally take a Sunday off, so you might call the pub just to be sure.

On February 8th we hosted our first Science Pub, in which a chemist from the University of Oregon came and gave a presentation on nanotechnology. It was enlightening, fascinating and fun and we plan on making this a regular occurrence. Evidently, this Science Pub thing has been going on for some time in the United Kingdom and as our pub culture continues to evolve here in the states, I think we’ll see more of this. I am excited to bring this tradition here to Albany, Oregon and will post the date on our events calendar as soon as we’re set for the next one!

There are other things on the horizon for our big, little pub and we are excited for the year ahead. John Shipe Returns to the ‘Pooia!

Greetings traveler, come in. Grab a beer, a seat and menu and abide awhile. This Saturday, September 4th, we welcome back to the best little pub in the valley, that fine singer/songwriter of the Northwest, JOHN SHIPE. John and his music are a real Cascadian product; stripped down, honest, without affect. He sounds like the voice of our dream-self, shown up for another day of school without our clothes on. Here is a man who has come by his material the hard way, as it seems all the best song-writers have. There is quality of assurance, not of possessing the answers but of knowing the right questions to ask. He is various, musically, drawing from folk, rock and pop influences to provide his sound with a depth that matches his lyricism. His is a sound that you are unlikely to hear on any radio-station not publicly owned. But to hear him live, you only need get yourself on down to the Calapooia Brewpub this Saturday and heed the first two sentences of this post. On that note, I leave you with this link. What has Eleven Eyes and will funk you up?

Eleven Eyes, that’s what. Comprised of some of the best musicians in the Willamette Valley, Eleven Eyes is a music nerd’s wet dream. I’ve been listening to Eleven Eyes since the band was born and have been following the musical adventures of about half the band since the mid-nineties. Based in Eugene, Eleven Eyes truly had it’s genesis in the fertile musical soil of Corvallis. I would argue that Corvallis has a greater number of good musicians per capita than any other place in Oregon. With a much smaller overall population than any other good music town, Corvallis enjoys a unique phenomenon. With all these extremely talented musicians crammed into such a small space, it doesn’t allow for the formation of scenes. Where larger towns have a blues scene, a jazz scene, rock scene, country scene, etc, in fact scenes within scenes, Corvallis’ musicians are forced to play with one another despite any differences in musical style. As a result, difficult to define fusions are created and an opportunity for real musical exploration is available to the practitioners as well as the aficionados. Eleven Eyes is a great example of just such a mash of varied musical styles. Perhaps most accurately dubbed Jazz/Funk/Fusion, Eleven Eyes will stimulate both your brain and your booty. Whether you are the kind of person who must first free your mind so that your ass may follow, or you’re inclined to free your ass that your mind may follow, Eleven Eyes is for you. www.myspace.com/eleveneyes.

As far as I can tell, this will be the first ever performance of Eleven Eyes in our little town of Albany. Remembering Summer ’09: Septembeerfest Pictures

Well with the weather officially going all rain on us for the foreseeable future, I figured getting these pictures of Septembeerfest might add a little sunshine for us. What a fantastic late summer day that was with temps in the low 90′s and catching up with all our friends at one of the last brewfests of the season. We had a great time again this year and look forward to next summer already!

The Music Scene!

Thanks to the fabulous work of our brewers and our cooks, The Calapooia Brewpub has enjoyed a great reception throughout the valley. When it comes to beer and burgers, we got it goin’ on. But that’s not all that’s goin’ on. We have been bringing great musical entertainment to the town of Albany for well over 2 years now. It started slowly, but now we have live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as well as a smokin’ hot blues jam every Sunday afternoon. The music is eclectic and is drawn primarily from valley talent. Sometimes we even get a visit from someone out of state. Most often, the music is free, and sometimes we charge a cover (hey, musicians gotta eat too), but it’s usually only a couple bucks. Join Us This Saturday in Corvallis for Septembeerfest!

This Saturday is the 12th Annual Septembeerfest, which is a benefit for the Linn Benton Food Share. The event is held at the Benton County Fairgrounds and admission is only $10.

Calapooia Brewing is the premier sponsor for the event and I asked Laura to tell me more about why this event is so special to us:

This is one of our biggest events for the year… these are our peeps… people who can actually come see us at the brewery! Plus, we are going to join our Corvallis counterparts under one tent this year so attendees can immediately find all their local breweries in one spot. And, for the price of entry, the attendees will receive a pint glass with the Septembeerfest logo on one side and our logo on the other… a great reminder to always “Drink Good Beer!”

The weather looks absolutely perfect for a late summer brewfest and it will be a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. See you there!

Phase 3 of the Brewery Expansion is Now Complete!

Hello all Calapooia fans. Yesterday was a very exciting day at the brewery. Phase 3 of the expansion went as smooth as silk and the 2 new 30 barrel fermenters are in the brewery. The rest of the week will be spent preparing them for next week’s maiden voyage. This means we will be brewing a lot more of your favorite beer! Stay tuned for phase 4, installation of the new 15 barrel brewhouse!

Join Us This Weekend at the Willamette River Festival in Albany, Oregon

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we’ll be serving up our delicious microbrews at the Willamette River Festival in Albany, Oregon. The forecast is showing that our record high heat earlier this week will give way to a weekend of low 90′s and sunshine. Perfect for a weekend on the river at Monteith Park!

Activities include a Rock Band 2 competition, a KCBS BBQ competition, a pirate exhibition, the Bi-Mart monster truck, and music all weekend long with country singer Amy Clawson on Saturday.

Come out and enjoy festival, and stop by the beer garden for a refreshing microbrew beer from Calapooia Brewing!

A Few Seats Are Still Available for Tuesday’s Bus Ride to the Game
