Another year comes to a close and it is time to party like it’s some year before it becomes another year. To facilitate this need, the Calapooia Brewpub will be visited by sensational simulcrum of Canadian supergroup Rush, WHY WHY ZED! On the cusp of 2012 they play homage to the science fiction inspired 1976 album, 2112 and launch us into the far reaches of outer space and tomorrow. The album tells a cautionary tale of mankinds future in the stars, when music has long been outlawed. An ancient relic is discovered by an innocent who is able to use it to make strange and pleasing sounds. With guitar in hand, he begins to undermine the power of the music-fearing technocracy by shredding the space-ways with awesome (Alex Lifeson) licks.

WHY WHY ZED enjoyed their debut on the Calapooia stage and now they return to guide us into the future with a bow to the past. There will be other musical surprises as well, so don’t miss this opportunity to ring the new year in right!

Music starts at 9:30 and the cover is $5. There will be much great food, beer and wine to accompany the merriment. Please join us, This Saturday, New Year’s Eve!

Cheers and Happy New Year!

Paulrus

P.S. Visit our Facebook page and the Why Why Zed Facebook page!

From the Mid-Willamette Valley comes a young bard with an old soul. Based in Eugene, with roots deep throughout the valley, including Albany, Tyler Fortier is a fine example of the artistic wealth of the region. Barely a quarter of a century old, Tyler exhibits a wisdom beyond his years. Lifetimes of pain, loss, renewal and hope can be heard in the voice of this old soul wearing the guise of a young man. Usually, such depth comes from much suffering and family strife, yet when Tyler plays the Calapooia, the place is filled with family and friends of at least 3, perhaps 4 generations, all delighting in him and one another. It’s as if he is able to speak for the newly born as well as the well worn with their full complicity. When you come to see and hear Tyler Fortier, alone or with a band, you’ll know you’re experiencing something very special.

Showtime is 8pm, Friday the 29th at The Calapooia Brewpub. Free.

Greetings traveler, come in. Grab a beer, a seat and menu and abide awhile. This Saturday, September 4th, we welcome back to the best little pub in the valley, that fine singer/songwriter of the Northwest, JOHN SHIPE. John and his music are a real Cascadian product; stripped down, honest, without affect. He sounds like the voice of our dream-self, shown up for another day of school without our clothes on. Here is a man who has come by his material the hard way, as it seems all the best song-writers have. There is quality of assurance, not of possessing the answers but of knowing the right questions to ask. He is various, musically, drawing from folk, rock and pop influences to provide his sound with a depth that matches his lyricism. His is a sound that you are unlikely to hear on any radio-station not publicly owned. But to hear him live, you only need get yourself on down to the Calapooia Brewpub this Saturday and heed the first two sentences of this post. On that note, I leave you with this link. Take a few minutes and check him out. www.myspace.com/johnshipemusic.

Last Friday the 12th, former Portland Trail Blazer center Chris Dudley was apparently on his way to the Linn County GOP Lincoln’s Day Dinner to run up his banner in the bid for the governor’s seat, when he decided to stop in for a pint at The Calapooia Brewpub. At 6’11″, the poor man can probably not go anywhere without being noticed, and sure enough, before he had even stepped through the front door of our humble and bustling establishment, there was a buzz. Flanked by aides sporting “Chris Dudley” across the top of their dress shirt pockets, he enjoyed a pint of our White Water Wheat and played a game of darts. Standing at the throwing line and reaching out, his arm spanned nearly half the distance to the board. I think it’s safe to say he’s the tallest man ever to enter our darling pub. Yours truly broke the ice with a request for a photo, wherein I looked like his child-hood teddy bear, brought along for comfort on a grueling campaign trail.

The gig was up for our guest by then and on his way out he was regaled with a gauntlet of greetings, questions and appreciation for his contribution for the Blazers. Come back anytime Chris, bring your friends and plan on staying a while.
